Board games have a longer and stranger history than most players realize. The same era that gave us Monopoly and chess clubs also gave us the precursors to every worker placement, deck-building, and legacy game on the shelf today. This quiz covers that full arc: Easy questions handle the classics most people have played; Medium goes into the mechanics and milestones of the modern hobby; Hard is for players who follow designers, read rules blogs, and know their GMT Games from their Stonemaier Games.
Each round draws 10 questions at random from a bank of 30 per difficulty level, so repeat plays will surface different combinations. Every question is followed by a fact note with specific context rather than a vague summary. Expect dates, designer names, and the occasional detail about why a rule works the way it does.
The question set is deliberately global in perspective. The German origins of the modern hobby game movement figure prominently, as do Japanese designers, Dutch publishers, and international release histories. The Spiel des Jahres, BoardGameGeek rankings, and the Kickstarter era each get coverage, alongside the older history of chess, Go, and backgammon that precedes all of it.
If there is a topic you think belongs in a future version, or a question you disagree with, leave a note in the comments.
Question bank: 30 questions per difficulty level (Easy, Medium, Hard), 10 drawn at random per session. Questions cover board game history from ancient games through the 2020s. We plan to add a fourth difficulty tier focused on wargames and hobby publishing history in a future update.
