Hollow Knight: Silksong Is Getting a Physical Edition and Free DLC

Hollow Knight: Silksong launched in September 2025, crashed every major digital storefront on day one, sold seven million copies, and won awards at the Golden Joysticks, The Game Awards, and the Steam Awards. That part of the story is settled. What is new is what comes next — and there is enough of it to warrant attention even if you already own the game.

The physical edition

Reliable leaker Billbil-kun — who has a near-perfect track record on retail listings — has revealed a physical edition of Hollow Knight: Silksong arriving October 16, 2026, for PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Team Cherry has not officially confirmed the date, but Billbil-kun’s track record means this is worth treating as credible rather than speculative. Pre-order information is expected from Team Cherry before long.

For collectors and players who prefer physical media, this is the first opportunity to own a boxed copy of the game since its digital-only launch. It also opens the door to a combined physical release with the original Hollow Knight, though nothing along those lines has been confirmed.

Sea of Sorrow — free DLC in 2026

In December 2025, Team Cherry confirmed Silksong’s first major expansion. Sea of Sorrow will be free for all players and features Hornet’s “voyage across and beneath the salt-stricken seas,” with new areas, bosses, tools, and unspecified additional content. Team Cherry has said further details will be shared shortly before release. No specific release date within 2026 has been given.

The free model is consistent with how Team Cherry handled the original Hollow Knight’s four DLC expansions, all of which were released at no charge to owners of the base game.

The original Hollow Knight is also getting updated

Alongside the sequel news, Team Cherry is bringing the original Hollow Knight to Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026, incorporating the same graphical and performance enhancements Silksong received on the platform — high frame rate modes, higher resolutions, and additional graphical effects. Existing Switch owners get the upgrade free. PC players can already access many of these improvements through a public beta branch on Steam and GOG, which added ultrawide and Steam Deck aspect ratio support among other fixes.

What to know if you have not played yet

Silksong is a Metroidvania — an exploration-driven action game built around unlocking new abilities to reach new areas of an interconnected world. It follows Hornet, a character from the original game, through a new kingdom called Pharloom. It is meaningfully harder than its predecessor, which has been both the most praised and most debated aspect of the game since launch. It is priced at $19.99 across all platforms.

For players new to the series entirely, the original Hollow Knight remains the recommended starting point — available on all platforms, still one of the best games in its genre, and now being actively updated. The Switch 2 Edition arriving later this year makes that an even easier entry point for Nintendo players.
