Phantom Blade Zero, a martial-arts action RPG from the Chinese studio S-GAME, launches October 29, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and PC. The release moved from September 9, and Wikipedia’s entry says the studio wanted more time to improve quality. Details here are current as of October 13, 2026, and no review scores exist yet. This preview is based on announcements and showcase footage, not hands-on play.
What the game is
Players control Soul, an elite assassin for a secretive organization called The Order. After he is framed for murder and left for dead, a mystic healer revives him, and he has 66 days to find out who set him up, according to RPGamer. The setting, called the Phantom World, is loosely based on Ming dynasty China and mixes wuxia, steampunk, cyberpunk, dark fantasy and horror.
Combat is third-person and built around blocking, parrying and dodging. Soul carries two main blades and two secondary weapons the game calls phantom edges, including cannons, lances and hammers. One difficulty option, called 66 Days, ends a run at the 66th defeat.
Sony gave the game its own State of Play on August 17, with almost 20 minutes of gameplay, and pre-orders opened with an 11-minute extended trailer, Push Square reported. The standard edition costs $59.99 or £54.99, and the Digital Deluxe edition costs $69.99 or £64.99. Deluxe adds early outfit and accessory unlocks, a digital artbook and the soundtrack.
A Chinese studio’s bet on big-budget games
S-GAME was founded in 2011 and is known for the Rainblood series and the Phantom Blade mobile games, according to Invest Hong Kong. The studio is headquartered in Beijing, its art center is in Hong Kong, and veteran Hong Kong film martial-arts choreographers worked on the combat. The actor Donnie Yen has been a creative consultant since 2023 and performed motion and facial capture for the character Mó Yuan.
The Wikipedia entry says Tencent formalized a partnership with the studio in 2021 and that investors added funding after Black Myth: Wukong succeeded in 2024. It quotes founder Liang Qiwei saying that success brought more resources and more pressure.
Sixth Tone, in January 2025, called Black Myth proof that Chinese console games can win over Western players, and listed Phantom Blade Zero as a contender. It also reported that early talk about the game’s gameplay and art direction sounded “overly familiar and derivative.” That assessment predates the August 2026 showcase.
GameBridges’ review of Where Winds Meet, a free-to-play wuxia RPG, covers similar martial-arts-fiction territory under a different business model. Phantom Blade Zero is a paid release.
